A dark roast doesn't need to mean bitter, burned, or carbon ash. The goal of our roasting has always been balance.

Dark Sumatra produces a rich and robust cup, and is our answer to those seeking a beautifully done dark roast.

Produced in the Lintongnihuta region on the southern shores of Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia, this coffee carries the quality of the Batak people. Dark Sumatra is bold and rich with a naturally rich body and viscosity. It is diligently harvested by triple-picking the ripest fruit before sun-drying in small batches to concentrate the rich flavors of the region.

I'll be hones at first I was angry when I saw the beans

I have trauma from dark roasts from all the 1st wave and 2nd wave coffees.. so you can imagine my utter contempt and disgust when I first saw these beans, all black and gross looking, with all the oils on the surface.

Then I brewed an aeropress. I was still made at myself for wasting all that money and falling for a friend's recommendation. Then I took a sip.. then the most sweetest after taste kicked in... OMG. What a wonderful coffee. It does taste like chocolate indeed.

I will still have trust issues for dark roast coffee, but I have found the only dark roast I am willing to purchase because I enjoy it so much. Thank you Caffe Lusso for proving my arrogance wrong, putting me into shame and coming back again and again (I will I promise).

It really does have excellent richness and dark cooca character without charcoal burnt character-- :))

    Dark magic

Super forgiving dark roast, even if my shots weren't perfect the bitterness was never overpowering. I looked forward to this coffee every day until the last bean.

good taste, not sure about freshness

The coffee is indeed not bitter, very smooth. I have a peculiar espresso machine and it requires fresh coffee or it won't reach the proper pressure no matter the grinding. 0-3 weeks is usually not a problem. This coffee was no problem for the 1st week but on the second week it was not working for my machine. I can only suspect the roasting date. I had the similar experience with the Brazil one. I get consistent behavior on coffees from other roasters. Don't know what to believe.

    An old customer returns...

The amazing thing about the shipment was the unparalleled freshness: 5 days from roaster to my grinder.
